Interview   with  Toxic  Ruin  done  by   Patrick

1.Hello   please  introduce  yourself to   the  readers? When  did  you  first  get  into  metal  music?

Hey dudes, my name is Dave Miller. I play drums for Toxic Ruin, and I have been listening to heavy Metal since birth.

2.Who   were  some  of  the  first  bands  you  listened to  and  who  are  some  of your  current  favorite  bands?

As a young kid I was all about Metallica. It was until I was about 13 that I started getting turned on to heavier music by my friends. Pantera, Slipknot, lamb of god, and other early 2000’s metal bands peaked my interest, but at the time I still didn’t know too much of the underground world of heavy metal. Nowadays some of my favorites are Revocation, Warbringer, and some super heavy proggy stuff too, like Beyond Creation. But I still have lots of love for the classics that started it all.

3.Besides  metal  music  do  you  listen  to  other  forms  of  underground  music? If  yes   who  are  some  of your  favorite  artists  and  bands?

Honestly, not very much. I am pretty much 99.99999% Metal haha.

4.In  2010  you first  started  The Ruin  what  gave  you  all  the  idea  to  start  this  band?

The idea was mostly between myself and one other member who is not a part of the current Toxic Ruin. We were, up until that point, a band who played only old hard rock and heavy metal covers and we no longer wanted cover songs to be our priority. So, we decided to ditch the couple guys in the group who weren’t into original material and begin putting our ideas into written structure.

5.What  made you   all  decide  to  change  the  name  of  the  band  to  Toxic  Ruin ?What  is  the  current  line up  of the  band? For  the  readers  who  have   never  heard  Toxic  Ruin’s music  how  would  you  best  describe  the  style?

The name change was brought on after the last major line-up change. We felt that the sound had changed so much with the shift in members, that a new name needed to be introduced as well. We were basically an all new band by this point in time. The current lineup is made up of Jake Baneck and Mike Hasselman on guitars, Stephen Behrendt on bass, Chubz (Tyler) Troulier on vocals and myself. Our style of music is epically orchestrated thrash metal that is fast, in your face, and always taking new turns.

6.Toxic  Ruin   released  their  debut  full-length  “Subterranean  Terror”  digitally   are  their   any  plans  to  release  it  on  a  physical  format  soon?

Subterranean Terror has been available on CD since the release was made. There has been thought of releasing Cassettes or vinyl, but so far nothing has been made available. You can order the physical copy on CD through our bandcamp page and we will ship anywhere! Check out all of our other merch while you’re there too!  Toxicruin.bandcamp.com

7.How  long  did  it  take  the  band  to  write  the  music  for  this  release?Does  the   whole  band  work  on  the  music  or does  one  member  usually  write  everything?

Subterranean Terror took about a year to finish writing and then another full year to fully record it. For the most part our writing process is a combined effort. We will all come in with different riffs or song sections and just piece together whatever is on the table. Sometimes one of us will have an entire song written when we come in, but nothing is set in stone until it’s printed on the album.

8.Who   usually  takes  care  of  writing  the  lyrics  for  the  music  what  are some  topics  you  all  wrote  about  on  “Subterranean  Terror”

Everyone but Jake and myself haha. I’m no good at putting words together, just at putting cool noises together. Jake is the same way, he’s a riff machine and has no time for lyrics haha. Some of the topics the other guys wrote about were battling Demons, killer underground worm dragons, and devastation of the planet by evil androids. Not much of the album is serious, and mostly it contains farfetched tails of metal fantasies.

9.Has  the  band  started  working  on  new   music  for the  next  release? Any  idea  how  many  songs  will  be  on  it?  Will  the  band  self-release  the  next  one  or  would you  like  to  work  with  a  label?

We absolutely have! So far it’s sounding killer and we can’t wait to start recording and showing it to people! We’re shooting to have more tracks on this one than the 10 that we included on Subterranean Terror, but we’re not sure on what it will total out at yet. There are no plans yet for how it will be released. It would be cool to work with a label but it’s also not totally necessary for us.

10.Besides  the  debut   does  the  band  have  any  other  merchandise   available   for the  readers to  buy?  If  yes   what  is  available   and  where  can  the  fans  buy  it?

Bandcamp! You can find all of our merch and downloads available on our bandcamp page and we will ship anywhere! Shirts, CD’s, and even can koozies!  toxicruin.bandcamp.com

11.What   does  underground  metal  mean  to  you  all?

Underground, to me, means keeping true to your roots. Not giving into what the mainstream expects to hear and staying off of the bandwagon. There are enough cookie cutter death punch bands out there, we don’t need to add more shit to the pile.

12.Besides   playing  in    Toxic  Ruin  are  any  of  the  members  currently  working  with  any  other  bands? If  yes  please  tell  the  readers  a  little  about  them?

Not at the moment. We are all working stiffs and hold full time jobs outside of Toxic Ruin, so there is no time for other projects.

13.When  not   working  on   new  music  or  band  business  what  do  you  enjoy  doing  in  your  free  time?

My time is spent with my wife, taking care of my baby girl. And if I can sneak away once in a while you can usually find me riding my dirt bike at the local track.

14.Thank  you  for  taking the  time  to  fill  this  interview  out  do  you  have  any  final   words  for the  readers?
